Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your website easier for search engines to find, understand and show to the right people. For a Pakistani business, that usually means customers in Lahore, Karachi, Islamabad or elsewhere searching in English or Urdu.
This guide covers the basics. It is based on Google's SEO Starter Guide, which is the most direct statement of what Google expects from websites.
What SEO cannot do
No one can guarantee a ranking or a number of visitors. Google's guide says there is "no guarantee that any particular site will be added to Google's index". Changes also take time to be reflected in search results. Be cautious of any agency that promises a fixed position.
Five basics to check first
- Make the content unique and useful. Pages should answer a real question from a real customer. Thin pages that repeat the same text across many locations or services do not help.
- Use descriptive page addresses. A page address such as /service/seo-services tells both visitors and search engines what the page is about. Avoid addresses made of random numbers or codes.
- Write clear page titles and headings. Each page should have one main topic, a clear title and headings that match what the page covers.
- Use descriptive link text. Google's guidance is to write link text that describes the destination. "See our web development services" is more useful than "click here".
- Do not stuff keywords. Repeating a phrase again and again is against Google's spam policies. Write for the reader first.
Two myths to drop
- Meta keywords do not help Google. Google's guide states that Google Search does not use the keywords meta tag. Time spent filling that tag is better spent on the page content.
- Longer is not automatically better. Google's guide says the length of content alone does not matter for ranking. A short page that answers the question clearly can be the right page.
A simple first-month checklist
- Confirm the site can be found by Google (Search Console is set up).
- Check each important page has a unique title and a clear first heading.
- List the questions your customers ask before they buy. Make sure a page answers each one.
- Make sure the phone number, address and business hours are the same on the website and on your Google Business Profile.
- Fix broken links and pages that return "not found" errors.
When to get help
If your site is small and you have time, the checklist above is a sound start. If you do not have time, or your site has technical problems such as slow loading or pages that cannot be indexed, a specialist review is useful.
