WordPress vs Shopify vs custom development.
Compare WordPress, Shopify and custom development for a business website or online store, with the questions to answer before you choose.

Most businesses that need a new website have three realistic options: WordPress, Shopify or a custom-built site. Each can work well. The right one depends on what the site must do, who will manage it and how it will grow.
This guide explains each option in plain terms and lists the questions to answer first. It does not give prices. Costs depend on features, integrations and hosting, and they change over time.
The three options
WordPress is open-source software. WordPress describes itself as licensed under the GPL (version 2 or later), built on PHP and MariaDB, and used by millions of sites. It is self-hosted, which means you choose a hosting provider, and it can run a simple brochure site, a blog, a booking site or a larger content platform. Its strength is flexibility and a very large ecosystem of themes and plugins.
Shopify is a hosted commerce platform. You sign up, choose a theme and add products, and Shopify handles hosting, checkout and updates. Shopify's own homepage describes it as a commerce platform with tools for payments, shipping and selling across channels, and says its app store lists more than 21,000 apps. Its strength is a ready-made store and checkout, with fewer technical decisions for the owner.
Custom development means a site built from code for one business's needs. It can be the best choice when the workflow is unusual, for example a membership portal, a booking system tied to internal staff tools, or a product configurator. It usually takes longer to build and needs a developer to maintain it.
Questions to answer first
- Do you sell online? If most of your revenue will come from products sold online, Shopify is often the fastest route to a working checkout. If you only need a showcase or lead-generation site, WordPress or a custom site may be enough.
- Who will update the site? If your team will edit pages and posts every week, choose a platform that makes editing simple for non-developers. WordPress and Shopify both do this well.
- Do you need unusual features? If your process is not covered by ready-made plugins or apps, custom development may be the better choice. Check the plugin or app list before you decide.
- Who will host and maintain it? WordPress needs hosting, updates and security care. Shopify manages hosting for you. A custom site needs ongoing developer support.
- How might you grow? Think about languages, more products, more staff and more integrations. Ask whether the platform can grow without a full rebuild.
- What does your current site do well? Keep anything that works, for example search traffic to existing pages, when you move platforms. Plan redirects so visitors and search engines reach the new pages.
A simple decision guide
- Choose WordPress if you want a content-led site, a blog, a service website or a flexible site with many options, and you can manage hosting and updates or hire someone to do it.
- Choose Shopify if your main goal is selling products online and you want a managed store with checkout and apps.
- Choose custom development if your workflow is unique, or no existing platform covers what you need without heavy workarounds.
Many businesses are well served by WordPress for content and Shopify for the store. The right answer depends on your own answers to the questions above.
